A number of compact SUVs have scored top marks in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests.
These are regarded as being highly prestigious and are conducted in the US. The latest Mitsubishi Outlander (above) and Volkswagen Tiguan (top) both scored 'good' ratings in the front, side and rear-impact tests, as did the Nissan Rogue (a cousin of the Qashqai) and the Mazda Tribute.
In earlier tests, the Honda CR-V, Honda Element and Subaru Forester also achieved results of that stature.
