WITH its image and name likely to be contested in court, the fledgling Congress of the People (Cope) is now under pressure to create a policy platform on which to campaign in by-elections it hopes to contest in only 21 days time.

A number of ANC councillors, who resigned their local government seats to join Cope, intend seeking re-election under the Cope banner in 44 by-elections countrywide to be held on December 10. Yesterday, however, Cope could not provide a final figure on how many by-elections it aims to contest.

(Newser) – Stocks rallied on Election Day as investors applauded the looming conclusion to the presidential race, the Wall Street Journal reports. Continuing declines in interbank lending, and strong third-quarter earnings reports also fueled optimism, with the Dow rising 305.45 to close at 9,625.28. The Nasdaq climbed 53.79 closing at 1,780.12, while the S&P 500 gained 39.45 to settle at 1,005.75.

The three-month US Libor dropped 0.10% to 2.706%, its 17th consecutive daily decline, signaling easing lending costs. Archer Daniels Midland rose 14.83% after the agricultural firm reported a doubling in third-quarter profit. MasterCard also shot up 18.2% despite reporting a quarterly loss of $194 million, because the loss was due to an antitrust penalty.

Many earnings reports were poor, and weekly jobless claims spiked, but investors also found bright spots amid the gloom. The Dow rose 172.04 to 8,691.25. (Newser) - Stocks extended earlier gains with a late-session rally today as Ben Bernanke voiced support for a new fiscal stimulus package and a key indicator showed a loosening in the flow of credit, MarketWatch reports. The Dow rose 413.21 to 9,265.43, the first time it has closed over 9,000 in 4 days. The Nasdaq gained 58.74 to close at 1,770.03, and the S&P 500 climbed 44.85 to settle at 985.40. More »
