MONTANA STATE UNIVERSITY RESEARCHERS RECEIVE GRANT TO STUDY ALGAE AS A SOURCE OF BIOFUEL

Article from: US Fed News Service, Including US State News Article date: November 13, 2008

Montana State University issued the following press release:

Recently, the U.S. Department of Energy awarded Montana State University and Utah State University a three-year, $900,000 grant to study the oil produced by algae, which could be a renewable source of biodiesel.

The two universities will split the money more or less down the middle, said Brent Peyton, a professor of chemical and biological engineering at MSU and the principal investigator of the grant.

"It's been known for 20 years that algae could produce lipids, but it really took the most recent spike in fuel prices to make ...

(Newser) – The steam engine wasn’t invented in the eighteenth century—it was invented in AD 60. But Romans instead stuck to their old standby technology: slaves. Now, we’re in danger of repeating that mistake with biofuels, writes David Ewing Duncan for Portfolio. While Congress is pumping subsidies into corn-based ethanol, better solutions—such as algae—are begging for attention.

Sapphire Energy, for example, has devised an algae-based fuel that it says it can produce for $60 a barrel. Unlike corn, the algae fuel won’t increase global food prices, and it’s carbon neutral. But agribusiness has lobbied hard to tilt the playing field toward ethanol. “The government runs the risk of discouraging a real future of renewable energy,” says Sapphire’s CEO. Just like Rome.

 Gas From Garbage
 Finally Gets Momentum

From sawdust to agricultural waste, scientists drive toward new fuels

(Newser) - After decades of dreaming, schemes to turn waste into fuel are finally getting traction in the US, with some 28 plants in the works and a handful even up and running, the New York Times reports. They consume everything from wood chips to garbage, as once-prohibitively expensive processes become competitive with $4-a-gallon gasoline. “American innovation is going to come up with the solution,” one researcher tells the Times. One Man's Coffee Grounds Are Another's Biodiesel

Waste can be turned into cheap fuel

(Newser) - If lattes seem overpriced now, wait until coffee becomes a precious commodity. An engineering professor spied an opportunity in the layer of oil he found floating in an old cup of coffee one morning. He extracted what was left in some used grounds—about 10%-15% oil by weight—with simple chemistry and produced $1-a-gallon biodiesel, the New York Times reports. More »
