New Coach Wellman Set To Lead AU Men's Basketball Team

Alfred University's athletics department issued the following news release:

All but two key players from a year ago return as head coach Dale Wellman begins his first year at the helm of the Alfred University men's basketball team.

The former Williams College assistant also welcomes back standout forward Pat Smithgall (Perry, NY/Perry) as the Saxons look to improve on a 2-23 record from last season.

While AU did lose a good portion of its scoring from 2007-08 -- forward Ellis Walsh (team-high 11.5 points per game) transferred and guard Garlen Patt (8.8 ppg) graduated -- there are several ...

Below 8,000, Dow Continues to Drop

(Newser) – Stocks took a slide at the open today, following a disastrous session yesterday that saw the Dow fall below the 8,000 mark. The Dow shed 160 points at the open, accompanied by 21- and 17-point declines in the Nasdaq and S&P. Stocks have fallen nearly 8% this week alone as fears over the auto and financial industries have run wild.

(Newser) - The economy lost 240,000 jobs in October, bringing unemployment to 6.5%, its highest rate since 1994. It was the 10th-straight negative month, bringing the year’s losses to 1.2 million. But the staggering report did little to move the needle on Wall Street, as the Dow actually rose 136 points before settling back. The S&P and Nasdaq saw similar modest gains of 1.3% and 1.4% respectively. More »

The Dow fell 152 points at the open, The Wall Street Journal reports, following yesterday’s 305-point rise, the biggest Election Day rally ever. “The conclusion of the election race has brought home the reality of the enormity of the task facing the new administration,” said one trader.
