Oprah Winfrey's attorney will move to have a lawsuit against her by the former headmistress of her girl's school, Professor Nomvuyo Mzamane, thrown out of court.

"The defamation lawsuit filed by Ms Mzamane on October 10 is completely without merit, and we look forward to its early dismissal," said Charles Sims, counsel for Winfrey and her companies.

Mzamane, former head of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy, instituted the suit after Winfrey refused to publicly apologise to Mzamane for "telling the whole world" that the former headmistress ...

(Newser) – A Louisiana man is suing Oprah Winfrey and the FBI for $180 million for falsely accusing him of extortion and damaging his reputation, Access Hollywood reports. Keifer Bonvillian was arrested in 2006 after recording conversations with—and accepting money from—a Harpo Productions employee. The extortion charges were dismissed after Bonvillian agreed to community service, drug testing, and restitution. A Winfrey lawyer denies the allegations.

The former star pitcher is likewise suing McNamee for telling federal investigators Clemens used steroids, but McNamee says because he was forced to talk with the investigation he’s immune from such suits. (Newser) - The US Supreme Court will not hear an appeal of Steven Hatfill’s defamation suit against the New York Times , Bloomberg reports. Hatfill, who was once suspected of masterminding the 2001 anthrax attacks, has long maintained that the paper's coverage—specifically, columns by Nicholas Kristof—damaged his reputation. But lower courts ruled that his prominence in the field of bioterrorism made him a public figure, and the high court agreed. More »
