Jun. 6--SCHENECTADY -- Two teenagers escaped with their lives after being struck by lightning as they stood underneath a tree during powerful thunderstorms that socked the Capital Region on Tuesday.

The victims, ages 16 and 18, were outside their group home at 1768 Eastern Parkway when the lightning "traveled down the tree into the ground," said Schenectady Fire Department Deputy Chief Scott Doherty.
