(Newser) – John McCain is tied with Barack Obama and has a 5-point edge over Hillary Clinton in a Reuters poll out today—an improvement for the Democrats. On economic stewardship, the Republican had a 3-point margin over Obama and a 5-point margin over Clinton. The pollster said the Dems continue hurting each other, “and McCain is getting a free pass.”

When the survey added Independent candidates Bob Barr and Ralph Nader to the hypothetical contests, Obama topped the presumptive Republican nominee, while the Clinton-McCain matchup remained unchanged. Obama’s national lead over Clinton grew to 51-38%, and the Illinois senator led among women and whites. Clinton led among the elderly, Latinos and less-educated voters.
