As McCain Falls, NH Senator Faces Trouble

(Newser) – One of this year's most bitterly contested Senate races is in New Hampshire, where the Republican John Sununu is facing a rematch with Jeanne Shaheen, whom he defeated in 2002. In the famously independent Granite State, Sununu was counting on the popularity of John McCain to propel him to victory. But as the top of the GOP ticket has faltered, Sununu is now facing an uphill battle to retain his seat, reports the New York Times.

McCain once enjoyed huge popularity in New Hampshire, trouncing George W. Bush in the 2000 primary and winning again in 2008. But McCain's national problems have trickled down, and analysts say that Sununu can only win if he convinces Obama voters to split the ticket. One voter said she liked Sununu but was backing the Democrats because of McCain's transformation: "I’m so sad. He used to be a good man, somebody you could trust."
