(Newser) – The election is heating up in Virginia, with fake notices and lawsuits flying around the swing state. The majority black region of Hampton Roads has been blanketed with official-seeming fliers falsely stating that Democrats are to vote November 5, Talking Points Memo reports. And the NAACP has sued the state, claiming that it is not prepared to handle increased turnout, especially in black precincts, the AP notes.

The fliers, incorporating official seals and logos, erroneously claim that the state has changed the date “to ensure fairness to the complete electorial (sic) process.” Gov. Tim Kaine, meanwhile, said the state is “extremely well-prepared,” having doubled the number of voting machines, and added 300 polling places and 11,000 election workers since 2004, the Richmond Times-Dispatch notes. The NAACP wants the courts to order the state to get yet more voting machines and extend voting hours.

Democrats See On-Edge Exurbs as Election Key

Economic unease, shifting demographics sap GOP strength

(Newser) - Economic anxiety may give Democrats a chance to advance into traditionally Republican outer suburbs this year, the Washington Post reports. In many key states, especially Virginia, the downturn and housing-market meltdown have severed the outer edges of metropolitan areas from the GOP. Largely centrist voters in exurban Virginia have driven recent Democratic victories there, and are key to Barack Obama’s chances. More »
