Raccoon tests positive for rabies; State notes a rise in infected animals.(LOCAL NEWS)

LEICESTER - A raccoon discovered attacking a dog in the Waite Street area last Friday has tested positive for rabies, according to Christopher M. Montiverdi, chairman of the Board of Health.

Mr. Montiverdi said the Waite Street homeowner found a raccoon biting one of his three dogs on its nose. He removed the raccoon and contacted the town's animal control officer. The raccoon was euthanized and sent to the state Department of Public Health lab in Jamaica Plain for testing.
