John Bayliss isn't, at first glance, the pioneering sort.
As a young man - in Spain, Greece and Germany through the 1980s - the Englishman gravitated to work in bars. But at the end of his globetrotting, he found himself in Seattle in the early 1990s and noticed a curious thing: the town's lousy ratio of beer (plenty) to televised soccer (none).
