EarthLink plans to launch a Wi-Fi handset, costing $100, to compete directly with fixed-line and wireless telco firms. The company is deploying citywide wireless LAN networks in various US cities, including San Francisco, Philadelphia, Anaheim, Atlanta, Pasadena, Milpitas, Corpus Christi, Alexandria, and St Petersburg. This new Wi-Fi handset, manufactured by Accton Technology, will enable users to make low-cost IP-based voice calls.
