Stephanie Martello's dog Lucy was a typically energetic, healthy Great Dane puppy when she brought her home in January 2006.

But at about six months, Lucy developed chronic diarrhea and other health problems. She eventually lost so much weight that Martello would hear people whispering behind her back that she must be abusing her beloved dog.

"Great Danes average 120 to 150 pounds and she was down to 81 pounds," Martello said. "She was lethargic. She was not the puppy I bought."
