MILAN (AP) — La Scala's gala season premiere of Verdi's "Giovanna d'Arco" ("Joan of Arc") will take place under extra security in the wake of the Paris attacks and indications that the famed Milanese theater is a possible target for extremists.

General Manager Alexander Pereira said Monday that guests would pass through metal detectors as part of enhanced security measures. Pereira told reporters Monday that "I think everyone can come with tranquility."

Pereira said that the choice of Verdi's opera recounting the story of France's patron saint was made two years ago and was "an artistic and musical choice, not a political one."

La Scala's principal conductor Riccardo Chailly will conduct the premiere, with Anna Netrebko singing the title role.
