The Tigers were coming off a three-game sweep of Texas in which they scored 37 runs, but didn't have nearly as much success against Ervin Santana (4-0).

Santana pitched 6 1-3 innings, allowing three runs and six hits. Justin Speier escaped jams in the seventh and eighth innings, and Francisco Rodriguez pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 tries.

Santana and Tigers starter Nate Robertson (0-3) cruised through the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth.

Chone Figgins led off the Angels' half with a double and Guerrero made it 2-0 with his third home run. Torii Hunter followed with a double and Los Angeles loaded the bases with a single and a walk before Casey Kotchman hit a two-run single.

Curtis Granderson led off the bottom half with his second homer of the season, and Magglio Ordonez hit an RBI single later in the inning.

The Tigers closed to 4-3 in the sixth. With the bases loaded, Miguel Cabrera beat out what would have been an inning-ending double play to drive in a run.

Detroit loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh and Speier retired Gary Sheffield on a liner to the warning track in left-center field. The Tigers put two runners on base in the eighth and Speier got Ivan Rodriguez on a lineout to Kotchman at first base.
