Automakers, gov't to reveal models in expanded Takata recall

DETROIT (AP) — Automakers and governments are starting to announce the models covered by last week's massive expansion of a Takata air bag recall.

Canadian safety regulators posted documents that add 1.2 million vehicles in Canada alone, including models made by Ford, Honda, BMW and Fiat Chrysler.

Millions of Takata air bag inflators can explode with too much force, spewing metal shrapnel into drivers or passengers. Six people have been killed and more than 100 injured due to the problem.

Last week the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Takata agreed to double the number of inflators it recalled to 33.8 million. But the makes and models were not available. The increase made it the largest auto recall in U.S. history, according to the agency.

These models and numbers were posted Thursday morning by Canadian safety regulators. The numbers are likely to grow when U.S. figures are announced later Thursday:

— Honda Motor Co.: 704,770 total for driver's side air bag inflators. 2001-2005 Civic, 2001-2007 Accord, 2002-2004 Odyssey, 2002-2006 CR-V, 2001-2005 Acura 1.7EL, 2002-2003 Acura TL, 2003 Acura CL, 2003-2006 Pilot, 2003-2010 Element, 2006 Ridgeline.

— BMW AG: 30,838 for driver's air bag inflators. 2002-2003 3 Series, 2003-2004 X5.

— Fiat Chrysler Automobiles N.V.: 374,508 driver's air bag inflators. 2005-2007 Charger, 2007-2008 Aspen, 2005-2007 Magnum, 2004-2011 Ram pickups, 2004-2008 Durango. Also 38,837 Ram pickups from 2002-2003 for passenger front inflators.

— Ford Motor Co.: 63,700 Mustang and GT models from 2005-2014 for driver's side inflators. Also 29,458 Ranger pickups for front passenger inflators from 2004-2006.

Eleven automakers have vehicles included in the Takata recall. A spokesman for Nissan Motor Co. said his company wouldn't have any additional vehicles in the latest recall expansion.
