KRAKOW, Poland (AP) — Hundreds of thousands of young pilgrims filled a vast meadow near Krakow for Mass with Pope Francis, as his five-day visit to southern Poland drew toward its end Sunday.

Some of the faithful had camped out overnight in the field some 20 kilometers (13 miles) from the city, after an evening with the pope there that attracted 1.6 million people, according to organizers from World Youth Day.

The week-long event was Francis' main focus on his first-ever trip to Eastern Europe.

On his way to the site, he made a stop to bless two buildings run by the Catholic charity Caritas, one built as a day center for the elderly and the other to be a storehouse for food for the needy called "The Bread of Mercy."

As he left, Francis nibbled on some dark bread from a big, round loaf offered by women in traditional Polish costumes. He nodded in approval as he chewed away.

The pope has had a busy schedule since he arrived in Poland Wednesday, visiting Auschwitz, celebrating public Masses, and holding many meetings with the eager young people who have traveled from around the world to be with him.

The event has been held amid very high security following a string of extremist attacks in Western Europe. No incidents were reported.
