FOX LAKE, Ill. (AP) — The latest on the fatal shooting of a police officer in northern Illinois (all times local):

3:30 p.m.

Authorities have identified the suburban Chicago police officer who was shot to death after chasing three men on foot.

Mayor Donny Schmit says that Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewitz had been with the Fox Lake Police Department for three decades and was the father of four sons.

The 52-year-old Gliniewitz was killed Tuesday morning in the small community about 55 miles north of Chicago. After the shooting, scores of police officers from local, state and federal law enforcement agencies scoured the area in search of the three suspects. Helicopters searched from the air and officers used bloodhounds to search on the ground.

Authorities urged residents to stay inside and had schools on lockdown.

Scores of residents have been confined to their homes as authorities conduct a massive hunt for three suspects in the shooting death of a suburban Chicago police officer.

In and around Fox Lake, police officers and SWAT teams in camouflage scoured the heavily wooded area as helicopters conducted a search from the sky for the three men wanted in Tuesday morning's fatal shooting of the officer.

Police have even taken people's dogs outside to relieve themselves rather than let residents do it themselves.

At least one school in the community located about 55 miles north of Chicago has been locked down, and service of one commuter train line has been halted. Meanwhile, small planes have been ordered to stay out of the area so helicopters can do their work.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies have joined in the search — some bringing bloodhounds with them in the hopes they can sniff out the suspects.

Police in northern Illinois say a manhunt is underway after an officer was shot and killed while pursuing a group of suspicious men.

Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli says the officer radioed in Tuesday morning to tell dispatchers he was chasing three men on foot, but communication with him was lost shortly after.

Covelli says the officer's backup arrived to found him injured with a gunshot wound and that the officer died at the scene.

He was killed in Fox Lake, 55 miles north of Chicago.

Undersheriff Raymond Rose tells the Chicago Tribune that he was stripped of his gun and other equipment.

Law enforcement officers are conducting a massive manhunt with helicopters, dogs and officers on foot.

Nearby Grant Community High School has been locked down.
