MADISON, Wis. (AP) — While Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is traveling the country in advance of an expected presidential campaign, fellow Republicans back home are grousing about his state budget proposal.

Republican lawmakers have already scaled back Walker's two-year spending plan, rejecting calls to cut public K-12 schools by $127 million and make the University of Wisconsin System independent from state law.

Lawmakers have openly harped about other parts of Walker's plan as they struggle with his call to borrow $1.3 billion to pay for highways and tap $250 million from taxpayers to pay for half of a new Milwaukee Bucks arena.

Absentee governors are part of the political landscape when a presidential campaign begins and some want to run. What may distinguish Walker, though, is the grief he's getting from his own party.
