DENVER (AP) — The son of U.S. Sen. Mark Udall was arrested on drug and trespassing charges, the Boulder County Sheriff's office said Thursday.

Jedediah Lee Fox-Udall, 26, was booked into Boulder County Jail Wednesday on suspicion of possession of drugs and four counts of trespassing, Cmdr. Heidi Prentup said. Deputies found him about noon when responding to a call of a man breaking into cars in the semi-rural community of Eldorado Springs, where Sen. Udall lives.

They discovered drug paraphernalia on Fox-Udall, and he admitted using heroin in the previous 48 hours, Prentup said.

He was released on $1,500 bond that evening and is due to appear in court on Feb. 20.

Sen. Udall and his wife issued a statement Thursday saying they were distressed to learn of his arrest and asked for privacy to deal with it as a family. They said they love their son and "stand with him in his commitment to getting the treatment he needs."

The Boulder Daily Camera was the first to report the arrest. Court records show Fox-Udall also faces a misdemeanor charge from a December incident in which he allegedly stole Advil and Imodium from a supermarket. The merchandise was valued at less than $50.

A Democrat who represented the region in the House of Representatives before winning his Senate seat in 2008, Sen. Udall is running for re-election this year.

Last summer, Udall's brother Randy Udall died during a hiking trip in Wyoming's Wind River Mountains.
