AUBURN, Ala. (AP) — Auburn point guard Kareem Canty has left the team and is turning pro.
Tigers coach Bruce Pearl, who announced Canty's decision on Friday, had suspended his leading scorer indefinitely last week before the Georgia game for "conduct detrimental to the team."
"It was his decision," Pearl said. "Kareem accomplished a lot on the basketball court.
"I think the frustration of the season, of so many injuries and not winning. Those combinations really took its toll on him as a competitor, which then led to the kind of conduct that was detrimental to the team."
Canty sat out last season after transferring from Marshall. The junior averaged 18.3 points, and also led the team in assists and 3-pointers.
Canty announced his decision "to enter the NBA draft and forego my senior season" in a series of posts on social media Thursday evening.
Canty also cited personal reasons behind his decision but praised both Auburn and Pearl.
Auburn, which plays Vanderbilt on Saturday, has lost six games in a row.
The backcourt has taken several hits this season. Guard Tahj Shamsid-Deen is out for the season following shoulder surgery while T.J. Dunans also hasn't played since December with a knee injury.
Pearl said Shamsid-Deen faces a decision on whether to return after having surgery on both shoulders since last season.
That leaves T.J. Lang and freshmen New Williams and Bryce Brown, along with walk on Patrick Keim.
