During Memorial Day observances at Arlington National Cemetery, President Barack Obama spoke about the sacrifices made by the nation's veterans — and felt by their loved ones.

Referring to "Gold Star" families who have lost sons, daughters, fathers, mothers and other relatives in conflicts around the world, the president said, "I see that their hearts are still broken, and yet still full of love," he said. "They do not ask for awards or honors. They do not ask for special treatment. They are unfailingly humble. In the face of unspeakable loss, they represent the best of who we are."

Here are images from Memorial Day observances around the nation.
