In this photo by Altaf Qadri, an Indian squatter smokes as others sleep on rented cots at a public park near Jama Masjid, or the Grand Mosque, in New Delhi. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on Oct. 17, was designated by the U.N. General Assembly to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in the world. About 400 million Indians — a quarter of the country's population — are living in poverty under $1.25 a day.
