Opposition leader announces he will pull out of election

By ANGUS SHAW | Associated Press | Jun 22, 08 8:10 AM CDT

Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai says he is pulling out of Friday's presidential runoff election against President Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe because of mounting violence and intimidation against his party.

Tsvangirai, head of the Movement for Democratic Change, announced his decision at a news conference in Zimbabwe's capital on Sunday after thousands of ruling party militants blockaded the site of the opposition party's main campaign rally.

The party says that police in full riot gear and soldiers have taken over the site of the rally.
