NEW YORK (AP) — A newborn girl with her umbilical cord still attached has plunged from the window of a New York City apartment building, and police are questioning her mother.

Officers responded to the seven-floor building in the University Heights section of the Bronx on Monday afternoon after a 911 caller reported that an infant had fallen out of a window.

The baby was pronounced dead by first responders in the building's rear concrete courtyard.

Police say the baby showed signs of trauma.

No arrests have been made.

A secretary for the building's landlord, P.R.V. Realty Corp., says police are investigating and declined to comment further. She said 50 people live in the building.
