The Israeli military says dozens of Palestinians breached the heavily-guarded border with Gaza and briefly entered Israel.

The military says five were detained Saturday and taken for questioning while the others retreated.

Two demonstrators were shot dead earlier in the day during a violent protest near the border. Seven Palestinians were killed the previous day, as protests and clashes that have gripped Israel and the West Bank spread to the Gaza border area.

Military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner says that given the history of Palestinian attacks along the Gaza border, Israel "must consider any breach of the buffer zone with Gaza to be a potential threat both to civilians and security forces."

Gaza health officials say two Palestinian youths have been killed in clashes with Israeli troops.

The officials say Israeli forces stationed at the border fence in southeast Gaza shot dead a 13-year-old and an 11-year-old Saturday during violent demonstrations. Officials said they were among dozens throwing rocks and rolling burning tires toward the border fence with Israel.

The Israeli military said it was looking into the reports.

Following a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers in Israel and the West Bank, violent protests spread to the Gaza border on Friday, when seven demonstrators were killed.

Police say a Palestinian attacker stabbed three police officers in Jerusalem before being shot dead.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Saturday afternoon's attack took place just outside the Old City. One of the officers was seriously wounded, while the other two were moderately wounded. Rosenfeld says other police forces opened fire and killed the attacker.

Earlier in the day, in a nearby location, a Palestinian teenager stabbed two Israelis before being shot dead by police.

Recent days have seen a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers in Israel and the West Bank.

Police say a Palestinian attacker has stabbed two people in Jerusalem, lightly injuring them.

Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says Saturday morning's attack took place in the central part of the city and police forces killed the attacker.

It's the latest incident in a wave of Palestinian stabbing attacks against civilians and soldiers in Israel and the West Bank over the past week.

The attacks started in Jerusalem over what Israel says are unfounded Palestinian rumors that Israel was expanding its presence at a sensitive holy site sacred to both Muslims And Jews. They have since spread to the rest on the country.

On Friday, for the first time since the current violence began, clashes broke out along the Gaza border. Palestinians there burned tires and threw rocks at Israeli troops on the frontier. Seven Palestinians were killed.
