MECHANIC FALLS, Maine (AP) — Police in Maine confirm a teen has died and two remain in critical condition after a haunted hayride crashed in Mechanic Falls.

Police did not release the name of the 17-year-old girl who died overnight of injuries sustained when the Jeep hauling the hay wagon lost control, prompting the wagon to careen down a hill and hit a tree.

Authorities say a teenage boy and the Jeep's driver are in critical condition. Twenty other passengers were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

A mechanical problem with the Jeep may have contributed to the accident, police say. State fire marshals inspect and license mechanical amusement rides in Maine, but hayrides do not require such licensing.

The accident occurred at Harvest Hills Farm, which features the Gauntlet Haunted Night Ride.
