INNSBRUCK, Austria (AP) — A team doctor of the Austrian ski federation died in a hospital in Sion on Friday, one day after he collapsed before a women's World Cup downhill training in Crans-Montana.

The Austrian ski federation said Michael Sachs passed away after being treated on the intensive care unit following the incident, which occurred in the finish area of the Swiss venue. It didn't reveal a cause of death.

"Dr. Michael Sachs was a long-term and very dedicated sports doctor," the federation said in a statement, adding Sachs "worked with full commitment as a team doctor with the Austrian ski federation and its athletes on the skiing World Cup and European Cup."

Sachs, who ran a private clinic in Salzburg specialized in sports injuries, also acted as an emergency doctor at several international events, most recently at the luge world championships in Koenigssee, Germany, two weeks ago.
