LONDON (AP) — A boat carrying hundreds of migrants to Europe capsized off Libya in what could be the Mediterranean's deadliest known migrant tragedy, with survivors arriving in Italy last week and the EU holding an emergency summit to combat smugglers and stem the tide of migration.

The disaster also put the focus on Syrians and others seeking refugee status in Europe who illegally cross into Greece from Turkey on their way to other European destinations.

In others news last week, Russian nationalist biker group the Night Wolves started out on a journey through parts of Europe to mark the 70th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

In South Africa, anti-immigrant violence this month has left at least seven people dead along with the destruction of homes and businesses.

Armenians marked the centenary of mass killings by the Ottoman Turks in which up to 1.5 million Armenians were slaughtered — an event widely viewed by scholars as genocide. Turkey, however, denies the deaths constituted genocide and says the death toll has been inflated.

In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron and opposition leaders were on the campaign trail before the May 7 election. Cameron, the Conservative Party leader, took a selfie with supporters — something Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has also done.
