MANCHESTER, England (AP) — The Latest on the evacuation of Manchester United's stadium after a suspicious package was found (all times local):

10.40 p.m.

Police say the device that was found at Manchester United's stadium before the match against Bournemouth in the Premier League was a training device that was left inside Old Trafford following an earlier security exercise.

Greater Manchester Police said the device was found in the toilets in the northwest corner of one of the stands by United staff. Explosive experts were called in to assess the item, which appeared to be an "incredibly realistic-looking explosive device."

The stadium was evacuated, the match was postponed, and bomb disposal experts dismantled the device.

John O'Hare, assistant chief constable from Greater Manchester Police, said "we have since found out that the item was a training device which had accidentally been left by a private company following a training exercise involving explosive search dogs."

The Premier League says that Manchester United will play Bournemouth on Tuesday night, two days after the match was postponed because of a fake bomb found at Old Trafford stadium.

The league made the announcement in a statement issued late Sunday, hours after police evacuated Old Trafford on the final day of the Premier League season and dismantled the device.

United has to win the match by a 19-goal margin or more to have any hope of finishing in fourth place and above crosstown rival Manchester City for a Champions League spot. The match will kick off at 8 p.m. Tuesday (1900 GMT).

Police say that a device found at Manchester United's stadium before a Premier League match "wasn't viable."

Greater Manchester Police also said in a tweet that a full search of Old Trafford was ongoing. In another tweet a few minutes earlier, the police force had described the item found as an "explosive device" that was "incredibly lifelike." Bomb disposal experts had carried out a controlled explosion on the item.

The police force didn't immediately answer calls seeking more comment.

The match between Manchester United and Bournemouth was called off and the stadium, which has a capacity for more than 75,000 fans, was evacuated.

The controlled blast came soon after British military bomb disposal experts arrived at Manchester United's stadium to investigate reports of a suspicious package.

The Premier League match between United and Bournemouth was called off after the stadium, which has a capacity for more than 75,000 fans, was evacuated.

Greater Manchester Police says a military bomb disposal unit has been dispatched to Manchester United's stadium to help police after the discovery of a suspicious item in the stands.

The deployment came as two stands at Old Trafford were evacuated shortly before Sunday's match against Bournemouth was due to kick off.

Sniffer dogs were also deployed in the stands and on the field.

The stands were evacuated about 30 minutes before the scheduled kickoff time of 3 p.m. local time (1400 GMT). The match was cancelled after police said they needed to deal with the suspicious item.

Old Trafford has a capacity for more than 75,000 fans.

A European security official says the suspicious item at Old Trafford coincided with increased chatter about threats to sports stadiums and other targets which would draw considerable crowds.

This said, leaving a package like this runs counter to tactics seen recently by extremists and the official said "many times these things amount to hoaxes."

The official said "the terror threat level associated with Irish dissidents has been raised recently due to credible threats we've been monitoring." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak about ongoing investigations.

Last week, British officials raised the threat level regarding a possible attack on the mainland by Irish Republican dissidents, upping the threat level from "moderate" to "substantial." That means an attack was viewed as a "strong possibility."

Security at Premier League stadiums was increased after the Paris attacks that killed 130 people in November, which involved three teams of attackers who blew themselves up or sprayed gunfire at the Stade de France sports stadium, cafes and bars, and the Bataclan concert hall.

A Premier League official says it's unclear when the match between Manchester United and Bournemouth will be played. Sunday's match was called off after a suspicious package was found at Old Trafford.

The official said the league will look to rearrange it for as soon as possible. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the Premier League had not yet issued an official statement.

Sunday was meant to be the final day of the Premier League season with all 20 teams supposed to kick off at the same time. But Old Trafford, which has a capacity for more than 75,000 fans, was evacuated about a half-hour before the scheduled kickoff at 3 p.m. (1400 GMT).

If United eventually win the match and crosstown rival Manchester City lose Sunday, then the Red Devils would get a Champions League qualification spot.

Manchester United's home game against Bournemouth in the Premier League has been called off after a suspect package was found inside Old Trafford stadium.

Greater Manchester police said on its Twitter page Sunday that the match had been abandoned.

Two stands inside Old Trafford — The Sir Alex Ferguson Stand and the Stretford End — were evacuated about 30 minutes before the scheduled kickoff time of 3 p.m. (1400 GMT), with United saying "a suspect package was found in the North West Quadrant."

Fans in other stands initially had been allowed to stay inside the stadium.

Police are asking people to "avoid the area if possible."

The rest of the Premier League games being played on Sunday, the final day of the season, went ahead as scheduled.
