Timeline of events before the crash of Flight 3407

Events leading to the crash of Flight 3407 on Thursday. Times are EST; some are approximate.

_ 7:10 p.m.: Flight 3407 to Buffalo is scheduled to leave Newark airport but is delayed by storms.

_ 9:18 p.m.: Plane takes off with 44 passengers, four crew members and one off-duty pilot.

_ 9:35 p.m.: Plane reaches cruising altitude of 16,000 feet.

_ Shortly before 9:58 p.m.: Flying through haze, crew asks to descend to 12,000 feet and is cleared for 11,000. Crew discusses "significant icing" on windshield and wings.

_ 9:58 p.m.: Plane begins steady descent.

_ 10:07 p.m.: Plane reaches 9,400 feet.

_ 10:15 p.m.: Voice from plane, likely First Officer Rebecca Shaw, acknowledges instructions to maintain 2,300-foot altitude and to prepare to land at the Buffalo airport.

_ 10:17 p.m.: Plane crew fails to respond to controllers.

_ Around 10:19 p.m.: Crew puts landing gear down and extends landing flaps. Plane begins to pitch and roll dramatically.

_ Around 10:20 p.m.: Plane plummets into a house in Clarence, a bit more than five miles from the airport.

_ 10:20 p.m.: After attempts to contact crew fail, controller tells ground communication: "You need to find out if anything is on the ground. This aircraft was five miles out and all of a sudden we have no response from that aircraft."
