Thousands of people supporting Arizona's new law cracking down on illegal immigration are gathering near the state Capitol.

The Saturday afternoon rally follows dueling events last weekend that drew thousands of opponents and supporters of the law to the Phoenix area.

Saturday's event is being held at a park in downtown Phoenix as soaring temperatures were expected to hit 107 degrees.

Rally organizer Daniel Smeriglio says participants traveled from around the U.S. to take part in what he says is a grassroots demonstration.

Former Republican Congressman Tom Tancredo of Colorado, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Republican state Sen. Russell Pearce are scheduled to speak at the event. Pearce is the author of the law that goes into effect next month.
