A Spanish official says three people died when a carnival ride malfunctioned in a village in central Spain.

An Interior Ministry representative in the Castilla-La Mancha region, Javier Corrochano, said three young Romanians died and a fourth was injured in the accident in the early hours of Tuesday in Villacanas.

Corrochano told Spanish National Radio it was not clear what went wrong.

Spanish newspaper El Mundo said a ride called the Tarantula came untethered from the ground and sent the victims flying out of cars.

Villacanas is a village of 9,000 people located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) east of the regional capital Toledo.
