A small earthquake has shaken a wide area of Southern California, but there's no word of damage.

The quake was initially estimated at magnitude 5.1, but that was quickly downgraded to 4.7.

The U.S. Geological Survey's automated monitoring system places the epicenter in the desert near Anza, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Los Angeles.

The late-morning quake was felt sharply in the local area. It was also felt in downtown Los Angeles.
