FLINT, Mich. (AP) — Officials have begun distributing filters to some Flint residents receiving water from the city's water system.

Tests have shown children with elevated levels of lead, months after Flint began drawing and treating water from the Flint River. The water is stirring up lead in old pipes in thousands of homes.

About 4,000 filters certified by the National Sanitation Foundation were handed out Saturday at the University of Michigan-Flint. An estimated 20,000 are needed.

Robyn Robinson tells The Flint Journal the filter she received will help but added she's not happy to be "paying a $100 bill every month for water I cannot fully use."

The state said Friday it's contributing at least $1 million to buy home water filters. Several philanthropic organizations also have been donating money for purchasing filters.
