US stocks slip in early trading, following Europe lower

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening modestly lower, following declines in Europe.

The price of crude oil jumped 3 percent in New York as traders worried that Turkey's downing of a Russian fighter plane could lead to worsening tensions over Syria.

Several companies were moving on earnings news. Signet Jewelers fell 5 percent after its latest quarterly profit came in far short of what analysts were expecting. Campbell Soup jumped 4 percent after its results beat expectations.

The Dow Jones industrial average 81 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,713 as of 9:35 a.m. Eastern time.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index gave up eight points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,078. The Nasdaq composite gave up 19 points, or 0.4 percent, to 5,082.
