Muslims in India and elsewhere in Asia offered prayers and slaughtered sheep and goats to mark the festival of Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of the Sacrifice.

The disputed region of Kashmir experienced its worst violence in years, as Indian and Pakistani forces traded mortar shells and gunfire, killing at least 19 people on both sides of the tense border. Each side blamed the other for starting the firing, which caused tens of thousands of people to flee their homes.

Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi, 60, and 17-year-old Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to protect children's rights. The Nobel Committee also said it gave the prize to the two individuals to nudge their rival countries together.

Pro-democracy protests occupying much of Hong Kong's center dwindled, and civil servants returned to work and schools reopened. But the government called off talks with student leaders aimed at defusing the standoff, causing thousands of protesters to pour into a main road in the city for a rally, reviving the civil disobedience movement.

Evening viewers in much of Asia were treated to a stunning lunar eclipse, though clouds obscured it for some. In Japan, clear skies turned partly cloudy as the eclipse progressed, but some people who gathered on the rooftops of skyscrapers in Tokyo saw the moon turn a rusty brown when the clouds cleared.
