LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fox News Channel anchorman Shepard Smith says the channel mistakenly reported that a Baltimore, Maryland, police officer shot a black man during a chase.

Smith told viewers that reporter Mike Tobin's error came during a chaotic situation Monday. Smith apologized for the mistake that he called "honest and straightforward" and said it was quickly corrected.

Baltimore police say officers were pursuing a man who was spotted on surveillance cameras and appeared to be armed with a handgun. A gunshot was heard during a brief chase before the man was taken into custody.

Police say officers never fired their weapons and no one was shot.

The incident came days after riots crippled Baltimore, where a black man, Freddie Gray, died last month after being taken into police custody.
