Even areas of the U.S. accustomed to gloating about their comparatively mild winters are shivering in temperatures that would make seasoned northerners don an extra layer of clothing. Temperatures in the single digits and teens were seen in Atlanta, Nashville and Panama City Beach, Fla. as well as Detroit, New York City and Pittsburgh.

The cold iced over rivers, roads and plants, stranded travelers and led people to swaddle themselves in multiple hats and scarves. Here's a gallery of images depicting the deep freeze.
