General FAQ

Creating and Removing Content

Can I create my own content on Newser?
Yes! You can create a thread -- a string of stories you compile to make up an ongoing narrative or address a particular issue. Learn more by reading the Thread FAQ.

I would like to remove my content from your site. What can I do?
Go to our Contact page and select Editorial to contact us.

Newser Points

How do I earn Newser Points?
Newser Points are awarded every time you:

  • Read a story (2 points)
  • View a story rollover (1 point)
  • Read a thread of related stories (5 points)
  • Create a thread (20 points)
  • Add to a thread (2 points)
  • View a grid (1 point)

What's a grid?
A grid is any section page, including the homepage, that displays Newser's rectangular story layouts. Read more in the Grid FAQ.

How do I participate?
This feature is exclusively for registered users. Registration is free. After registration, visit your My Account page to activate this feature.

How is ranking calculated?
Ranking is calculated periodically and compares your point total to those of other registered users. Ranks are calculated over 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, 365 days, and all time. You can see your current rank on your My Points account page.

My ranking doesn't show my live score. Why is that?
24-hour rankings are calculated every 5 minutes; they are not live. Check back in a few minutes, and the scores will match.

I just opened Newser and don't see my points. What's going on?
Make sure you are logged in. You can only earn points if you are registered and logged in.

Can I opt out? I don't want to participate.
Of course! If you opt in and then change your mind, you can change your settings on your My Points account page.

I opted out, but I am still in the ranking. What's going on?
Because rankings are calculated periodically, it may take up to a day for your username to be removed from the rankings.
