OK skiers and snowboarders, yet more reason to rejoice: Grand Targhee is opening on Friday, Nov. 27.
The resort—which is in western Wyoming, but only reachable via Idaho—will kick off the season by opening the Shoshone chairlift and the Papoose Conveyor. Unfortunately, much of the early-season snow didn’t last, so the top of the hill will be closed until conditions improve.
The good new that comes with a partial opening is partial ticket prices. An all-day lift ticket will run you just $39 or $33 for a half-day.
Resort restaurants will be open throughout the day, and the ski school and kids club will be open as well.Better yet, the opening weekend will include the Targhee Protect Our Winters party on Saturday, Nov. 28 at the Trap Bar. The celebration will get going at 3 p.m. with a screening of Signatures from Sweetgrass Productions. Following the film, Salem—described as a “a socially conscious hip hop/jazz/reggae influenced band”—will perform.
More regional resorts are hoping to open soon, although Sun Valley will open on Thursday, Nov. 26 thanks to a heavy dose of man-made snow. Lookout Pass, on the Montana border, is scheduled to open on Monday, Nov. 30.
Resorts in Oregon are doing much better, with Timberline, Mt. Hood Meadows, Mt. Bachelor and Mt. Hood Ski Bowl already open for the season.
A blurry Griswold Christmas; maybe as seen through eggnogg goggles.
One of my Christmas traditions is judging the trees at the St. Alphonsus Festival of Trees in the Boise Center. For the last three or four years, I have joined a large group of community members willing to donate a little time to judge decorated Christmas trees. Some of the trees are traditional, some are geared specifically at children and yet others stretch the idea of what a Christmas tree should look like in creative and beautiful ways.
Fellow BW staffer Deanna Darr and I teamed up with Meridian Mayor Tammy DeWeerd and Meridian council member David Zaremba to award points to red and white trees; country-themed trees, a tree-bute to the silver screen; a colorful nod to The Wizard of Oz; and one in which Sesame Street's Big Bird served as an adorable, big yellow centerpiece.
The Festival of Trees official opens tonight with the Gala, a formal dinner and decorated-tree auction which 1,000 people are expected to attend.
For more information on the trees or any of the Festival events, visit saintalphonsus.org.
