    WICHITA — Nearly 1,000 Muslims prayed and celebrated this morning at the annual Eid al-Adha at Century II Convention Center.

    It is a major celebration for Muslims around the world, and today people came from across the region to participate.

    "This is one of the most central locations for Eid, so people come from all over." said Afshan Khan, 19, who attended with her family.

  • Bleary-eyed Wichita shoppers get an early start on Black Friday shopping

    A variety of stores across Wichita and the nation opened their doors before dawn this morning, officially kicking off the holiday shopping season with a variety of discounts on everything from toys to TVs.

    Shoppers were lined up in front of Old Navy at 21st and Maize Road for the store's 3 a.m. opening.

    By the time the store opened, Phillip Purcell and a friend had been waiting in line for more than five hours. Purcell arrived at 9:30 Thanksgiving night, drawn by a free Lego Rock Band game with a $20 purchase.

  • Police still at home where couple was killed

    As the sun rose today, crime scene tape and officers remained at a house at Chatauqua and Elm where police found a young couple shot to death Thursday afternoon.

    Two children at the home were not injured.

    This morning, two officers sat in patrol cars outside the home.

  • Black Friday shoppers hit the stores

    While many other stores had Black Friday shoppers scurrying in and out for hours Friday, a short line was forming just after 5 a.m. outside the Home Depot.

    The popular item wasn't a TV, cookware or an Old Navy sweater, but a $20 Shop-Vac.

    Gerrad Hall, of Topeka, was standing in line for the wet/dry vacuum with three others. It was his first Black Friday experience.

  • Two bodies, two kids found in house near Central, Hillside

    Police found a man and woman in their mid-20s shot to death in a house with two children wandering around about 2:30 p.m. today in the 600 block of North Chautauqua, northwest of Central and Hillside.

    Police are investigating as "some type of robbery," Capt. Jeff Easter said.

    Easter said family members became concerned when the pair did not show up for Thanksgiving dinner, went to the house to check on them and found the two dead, then called police.

  • Zoo serves feast fit for elephants

    The most anticipated piece of Thanksgiving for 8-year-old Olivia Moore wasn't the pie at her family's dinner. It was watching Cinda the elephant use her trunk to shovel a sweet potato pie, complete with peanut crust, into her mouth.

    "It's cool because animals usually can't have people food, and they can have people food," said Olivia, who met Cinda about five months ago during the girl's elephant-themed birthday party.

    Olivia's family was one of several at the Sedgwick County Zoo that crowded around Thursday to see two 38-year-old African elephants eat their special meals, down to the cardboard platters.

  • City will revamp intersection of 13th, Mosley

    Traffic on 13th Street near Mosley will be limited to one lane in each direction for a few months this winter, city officials said.

    That's to make way for a $1.6 million road and sewer improvement project that will add left-turn lanes in all directions and new traffic signals at the intersection.

    It will also repave 13th from Washington west to Santa Fe.
