  • Recovery has doctor giving thanks

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

Courtney Moose is grateful to sit with her family today for Thanksgiving dinner. She almost missed it. Her life changed on a Tuesday afternoon in July in east Sioux Falls. She was driving north on Six Mile Road when a truck going east on Highway 42 ran a red light, squashed her GMC Yukon and drove it 150 feet up the roadway. She was critically injured, with a head laceration and more than 20 broken bones, including seven in her neck. Emergency workers extricated her from her SUV. More »

  • Abortion donor case ends

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

The state of South Dakota is done trying to find out the name of the anonymous donor who gave $750,000 to the failed abortion ban campaign in 2006. Attorney General Marty Jackley, Secretary of State Chris Nelson, Promising Future Inc. and State Rep. Roger Hunt, R-Brandon, announced Wednesday that the state will take no further legal action to force the release of the donor's name. In exchange, Hunt will pay his own legal fees for his part in the three-year battle. More »

  • Humane Society regains S.F. contract

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

The Sioux Falls Humane Society has regained Sioux Falls' animal shelter contract from Second Chance Rescue, but it did so without the approval of the City Council. Second Chance took over the contract from the Humane Society in 2007. But this year, the Humane Society put in a bid for the 2010 contract that was slightly more than half of Second Chance's bid. The nonprofit will begin taking care of Sioux Falls strays starting in January. The three-year contract with the city of Sioux Falls is for $115,000 in 2010. More »

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

Cinemark started work recently on a new theater just south of the new Target in the Shoppes at Dawley Farm Village along Highway 11 south of Arrowhead Parkway. Earlier this month, Target opened in the new development, and Kohl's is set to begin construction of a new store this summer. More »

  • High propane demand leads to executive order on deliveries

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

Following low inventories and widespread outages of propane in South Dakota, Gov. Mike Rounds has extended the expedited delivery of commercial agricultural deliveries through the Thanksgiving holiday weekend and next week. Demand for propane has been high this fall because of the wet weather and its use in drying crops. The executive order, issued Tuesday, extends until midnight on Dec. 5 an earlier order that was due to expire Sunday. "It's imperative that supplies keep up with demand," Rounds said. "Farmers have bumper crops this year, and we must make sure they have all the propane they need to dry those crops and adequately preserve the harvest." More »

  • Play it safe while shopping to avoid holiday grinches

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

As shoppers hunt for bargains Black Friday, some people surely will hunt for opportunities to take advantage of the huge crowds in a different way altogether, police say. The rush through the doors for retailers also is a safety concern during Black Friday, one of the biggest shopping days of the year in Sioux Falls and around the country. The number of thefts in Sioux Falls rises slightly every year during the holiday season, Lt. Dan Kaiser said, but common sense steps can help protect shoppers. More »

  • Bird count event looking for new participants

    Argus Leader | 11/25/2009 10:00:00 PM

It's the longest-running citizen science project in the nation, and organizers of the 110th Christmas Bird Count are looking for new participants. Since the first one in 1900, the Audubon Society's Christmas Bird Count has provided an unbroken narrative about the distribution and numbers of birds as development, population increase and climate change have affected the country. "Everyone who takes part in the Christmas Bird Count plays a critical role in helping us focus attention and conservation where it is most needed." said Dr. Tom Bancroft, Audubon's chief scientist.
