    Argus Leader | 11/24/2009 10:49:00 PM

The idea is to bring a taste of rural life to the edge of the city. That starts today with the opening of Family Park, built around a fishing-rich pond west of Sioux Falls. Along with many types of fish native to the pond, it has been stocked with 7,000 rainbow trout. More »

A Tea couple used their duplex as the home base for an underage sex trafficking operation, according to a complaint filed this week in U.S. District Court. Court documents say Brandon Quincy Thompson, 26, and his girlfriend, Megan Marie Hayes, 30, conspired to sell the services of underage prostitutes by placing ads on the online classified Web site www.backpage.com. U.S. Attorney Brendan Johnson would not comment on the extent of the couple's criminal activities or the number of victims, but three underage victims are mentioned in the complaint. More »

  • Five-year contract restored for fair

    Argus Leader | 11/24/2009 10:00:00 PM

The Minnehaha County Commission gave the embattled Sioux Empire Fair Association a vote of confidence Tuesday by restoring a traditional five-year management contract with the group by a 3-2 vote. But commissioners remain troubled by the fair association's ongoing $576,987 debt. Commission Chairman John Pekas cast a 'no' vote. • Johnson becomes target in health care reform debate

    Argus Leader | 11/24/2009 10:00:00 PM

WASHINGTON - South Dakota Sen. Tim Johnson is one of several moderate senators targeted in television ads this week by a conservative group opposed to sweeping health reform that's inching its way through Congress. The 30-second spot attacks a health care bill that House Democrats passed this month because it would cut as much as $500 billion in Medicare to help pay for the expansion and restructuring of the medical insurance system in America. Johnson was one of 60 Democrats who voted Saturday to block a Republican filibuster and allow a floor vote on a Senate version that also calls for Medicare cuts to help finance reform. The ad, running in South Dakota and eight other states with moderate senators, warns seniors that the cuts could jeopardize the government health care they have now. It encourages viewers to call their senators and "stop the Medicare cuts." More »

    Argus Leader | 11/24/2009 10:00:00 PM

More South Dakotans will stay closer to home during the Thanksgiving holiday, according to projections from AAA South Dakota. Air travel is projected to dip 11.4 percent this year over last, and auto travel will decrease 2.2 percent for trips more than 50 miles from home, AAA's survey shows. That equates to more than 9,000 people flying during the holiday weekend and about 155,000 South Dakotans driving. "I think the bottom line is people are still being very, very careful with their money. There's less discretionary income to be had," said Mark Madeja, spokesman for AAA South Dakota. More »
