Overview: Aggregation + Intelligence

Newser's mission is to scour the web to find the most important stories, the most compelling stories, and those that will be the most talked-about. To select the news and opinion that matters most, we use a combination of proprietary technology and editorial judgment. The methodology we use in choosing stories can be broken down into three categories: Most Covered, Most Popular and Editor's Choice.

Most Covered

Using proprietary technology, we monitor the 100 leading English language news sources in real time, tracking news stories as they achieve critical levels of coverage. Our editors select for inclusion on the site those stories that have been deemed newsworthy by a critical mass of the most important news organizations. Writers then summarize those stories, choosing the best sources for each, and synthesizing the news and information they offer.

Most Popular

To tap stories that readers of other sites have found to be most compelling, we monitor the "Most Viewed" and "Most Emailed" feeds from our Top 100 sources. If a specific story tops the Most Read or Most Emailed list on one of our sources, and the editors feel its appeal reaches beyond a local audience, we cover it on Newser.

Editor's Choice

In addition to stories that are highly covered or shared, Newser editors look for the most important and most compelling journalism being done by individual sources: enterprise stories, investigative pieces, insightful analysis, profiles and features. These stories often become part of the conversation, achieving broad coverage long after they are included on Newser. And they allow users to discover fascinating and often overlooked work without having to search endlessly to find it.
