Mattingly Aimed to Take After Torre

(Newser) – When Don Mattingly came out of retirement to join up as the Yankees' hitting coach, he already had his sights set on following in Joe Torre's managerial footsteps, reports the New York Times. "I’ve known from the beginning what I wanted," said Mattingly, who is said to have impressed Yankee management and owner George Steinbrenner in interviews yesterday.

Mattingly is thought to be Steinbrenner's favorite candidate for the team's new manager, though Joe Girardi reportedly also went over well in interviews on Monday. The team plans to meet with Tony Pena today. Johnny Damon is rooting for Mattingly, who is well liked and respected by the team, and fans love Donnie Baseball as well.
