Rupert Murdoch is a lot like Citizen Kane, with one minor difference. Kane tried to buy high office for himself. Murdoch “just puts politicians on his payroll,” writes Paul Krugman for the New York Times. “And I mean that literally.” As Politico pointed out recently, Fox News employs all the major 2012 GOP hopefuls except Mitt Romney. Sure, media moguls often bolster their favorite politicians, “but directly cutting checks … takes it to a whole new level of blatancy.”

By hiring these candidates, “Fox News seems to have decided that it no longer needs to maintain even the pretense of being nonpartisan,” says Krugman. It’s also “gone from merely supporting Republican candidates to anointing them.” Christine O’Donnell is often called a tea party candidate, but she could as easily be called a Fox News candidate—not that there is much of a difference. “Republicans originally thought that Fox worked for us,” David Frum recently observed, “and now we are discovering we work for Fox.” (More Paul Krugman stories.)
