Marathoner Who Died Was Hauled to Wrong ER

(Newser) – Earlier this month at the sweltering Chicago Marathon, the ambulance transporting the runner who died got lost, had to get directions from another ambulance, and eventually ended up in the wrong emergency room. The man was in full cardiac arrest when the ambulance arrived on the scene and was, according to one official, unresponsive the entire time, reports the Chicago Sun-Times.

After treating the man at the scene, the paramedics headed in the opposite direction of their intended hospital, then radioed in for directions but got no response. They eventually ended up at another emergency room. The ambulance was one of 30 that were called in from the suburbs to assist with the marathon. Officials couldn’t say whether the delay affected the outcome.
