The new Jackass movie is out in 3D splendor, and maybe the most telling fact about early reaction is that it's got a lukewarm 52% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a loving 83% from audiences. Some review samples:

  • Stephen Whitty, Star-Ledger: "It's hard not laugh at some of their inventively stupid stunts," he writes. "But too many of these sequences are merely disgusting."

  • Justin Chang, Variety: The boys are getting old, but "they have every reason to continue if they can keep cooking up setpieces as memorable as the pic's unmistakable highlight, which merges the physical horrors of a Port-A-Potty with the visceral thrills of a theme-park ride. The result is an image as hideous as any Jackass has produced, but from a conceptual standpoint, it's a thing of what can only be described as beauty."
  • Kyle Smith, New York Post: He sees all kinds parallels with Dante, of course. Ending with: "Oh, and one more thing the comedy of Jackass 3D has in common with The Divine Comedy: Neither of them is funny. "
