NPR Chief Sorry for Williams 'Psychiatrist' Dig

Ombudsman says firing mishandled; DeMint want to cut funds

(Newser) – NPR’s chief has apologized for suggesting Juan Williams keep his feelings about Muslims between himself and “his psychiatrist or publicist,” the station’s website notes. “I spoke hastily and I apologize to Juan and others for my thoughtless remark,” said Vivian Schiller. In a separate memo to member stations, Schiller wrote that Williams’ behavior was misguided because he was an analyst and not “a commentator or columnist.”

“News analysts may not take personal public positions on controversial issues; doing so undermines their credibility as analysts,” she wrote. NPR’s ombudsman says the station mishandled the situation. “A more deliberative approach might have enabled NPR to avoid what has turned into a public relations nightmare,” writes Alicia Shepard. But “the fact remains that NPR must uphold its journalistic standards.” Meanwhile, GOP Sen. Jim DeMint plans to introduce legislation to cut NPR’s federal funds, Gawker says.

Ms. Schiller, your verbal couple with the non verbal smile when stating those words, leads me to believe you have a major character flaw, and should be be if not already see a medical professional regarding how your mind thinks, that those who oppose your contributors and your own views are cynical, unethical, and guttural. In order to save the already disturbing view and face you have placed on NPR and public funding ventures you should RESIGN IMMEDIATELY without any severance. We will await your decision

Sorry Conserva-droids who never listened to or supported NPR anyway, but NPR was *absolutely right* to fire Williams for his **PUBLIC** remarks, as they undermine his credibility *AS AN ANALYST.* I know this whole reading-carefully thing is new to most of you, and that it's easier to shout slogans about socialism (not that you have ANY idea what that means either), but an NPR analyst saying Muslims make him nervous is akin to a fireman saying he doesn't feel any obligation to go out of his way to rescue muslims from burning buildings. It's a belief he has every right to have, but it makes him **fundamentally unfit for his job.** No matter how racist, homophobic and/or anti-other god's children you might be, you REALLY REALLY do not want people who you depend on to be fair and impartial making decisions based on personal biases and have that get the nod of societal approval. Williams had to be fired to send a clear message, and I fully support NPR for doing so. As for Jim DeMint, he's an asshole, but that's so not news even Juan Williams knew it.

Living down to her own standards, shouldn't Ms Schiller can herself or resign?
