(Newser) – The Detroit Red Wings had the San Jose Sharks on the run from the outset of last night's game, scoring five unanswered goals before conceding one. Detroit's Valtteri Filppula had his first goal and first assist of the season in the first period, helping push his team to the top of the Western Conference, reports the Detroit News.

The Sharks' failings weren't limited to goals: the Red Wings also dominated them with 39 shots on goal, compared to the Sharks' measly 11. And the score might have been even higher if it weren't for a goalie interference call on Tomas Holmstrom, his fourth of the season. "It wasn't our night at all," admitted San Jose coach Ron Wilson.
